Songs about Gratitude (part 2 of 2)

last updated October 29, 2020

posted by Catharine Hannay

Following up on the popular Songs about Gratitude playlist, here are a dozen more songs about appreciating our circumstances and our loved ones, followed by questions for reflection and discussion.

As usual, I've included a variety of musical styles, so there should be something for everyone.  Teachers, I've included a snippet of the lyrics for each song to help you decide what might be appropriate for your class.

A Beautiful Day, india.arie
youtube video with lyrics

"I open up my heart and I’m gonna do my part and make this a positively beautiful day.  Life is a challenge not a competition. You can still smell the roses and be on a mission."

The Best Day, Taylor Swift
lyricsofficial video (with home movies from her childhood and adolescence)

"I'm thirteen now and don't know how my friends could be so mean.  I come home crying, and you hold me tight and grab the keys... I don't know who I'm gonna talk to now at school, but I know I'm laughing on the car ride home with you."

Grateful, by John Bucchino (performed by Art Garfunkel)
lyrics; video (audio with album cover)

"I've got a heart that can hold love.  I've got a mind that can think.  There may be times when I lose the light and let my spirits sink, but I can't stay depressed when I remember how I'm blessed."

Grateful, Jewel
lyricsaudio + album cover
"When the loudest sound is your own life crashing down. And when your friends don't come around. There's one true thing I've found. It's all the little things, the bells that ring. The green green grass and the birds that sing. I'm gonna choose the bright side to see. And no one can take that from me."

Grateful: A Love Song to the World, by Nimo Patel and Daniel Nahmod
lyrics; video featuring grateful adults and children from around the world
"You’re my pain.  You’re my sorrow.  You’re my hope for tomorrow.  You’re the strength when I’m hollow.  You’re the path that I follow.  You’re the blessings that exist.  The small things that are bliss.  The gift to realize that everything is a gift."

Gratitude Attitude, Nate Sabin and Greyley Sabin
video (lyrics not available)

A father-daughter duo expressing gratitude to God: "I've got a gratitude attitude, got a smile on my face. Got a gratitude attitude, I got about a million reasons to pray."

It Feels So Good to Be Living, Bill Gaither Trio
video of cover by Damon Timm, with American Sign Language by Rosa Lee Timm, + Lyrics
"Giggle and tears, joy and surprises... working and resting, chuckles and sighs.  Feels so good to be living."

My Favorite Things, Rodgers and Hammerstein
lyrics; video clip from The Sound of Music; audio of Kelly Clarkson; instrumental jazz by John Coltrane

"When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things (like silver white winters that melt into springs), and then I don't feel so bad."

Thank Someone, Amy Grant & John Hiatt
lyrics; video (audio with album cover)

"Mom put down the paper just to help me find my shoes. Kim likes chocolate doughnuts, so her cousin gave her two. And Grandpa played with Julio.   He took him to the park.  If you forgot to thank someone, say thank you in the dark."

Thank You, Ashanti
lyrics; video (audio with album cover)

"I don't know what I would do if I didn't have you in my life.  I wanna say thank you, I love you, and I miss you."

Thank You, Dido
lyrics; video by Jason Listman in American Sign Language

"I drank too much last night.  Got bills to pay... I missed the bus and there'll be hell today.  I'm late for work again... And then you call me and it's not so bad... Just to be with you is having the best day of my life."

Thank You (A Song for Friends & Family), Brandin Reed
video (song starts :37; I couldn't find lyrics for this one. The description says "
I've faced some serious challenges... there's no way I could have made it through without... my friends and family.")
"Don't know where I'd go.  Don't know what I'd do.  Don't know if I'd be standing here now without you."

Thank You in 45 LanguagesGuillermo Echevarria

Thank You in 50 Languages, Money Master Kids TV

Thankful, Kelly Clarkson
lyricsvideo (audio with album cover)

"You know my soul.  You know everything about me there's to know.  You know my heart, how to make me stop & how to make me go.  You should know that I'm thankful for the blessing and the lessons that I've learned with you."

Thankful, Josh Groban
lyricsvideo of cover by student a cappella group Beyond Measure (shows people holding up signs of what they're thankful for)

"It's up to us to be the change. And even though we all can still do more, there's so much to be thankful for. Even with our differences, there is a place we're all connected. Each of us can find each other's light."

Wonderful Life (in 28 Languages), from the movie Smallfoot

Questions for Reflection and Discussion

  • Has someone helped you cheer up after a bad day?  What did they do or say to make you feel better?  Could you do the same thing to help someone else?
  • When you're feeling bad, what kinds of things do you (or could you) think about to make yourself feel better?
  • Do you think it's true that "you can still smell the roses and be on a mission"?  What are some ways you can enjoy yourself and help others?
  • What (and who) are you most thankful for?
