I'm transitioning from blogging here at Mindful Teachers to blogging at my new author site. Today's post is about mindful speech, and how we can unintentionally invalidate the person we're trying to help.
“Why don’t you just…?”
“You should take care of yourself.”
“I know exactly how you feel.”
We don’t say these things in order to be hurtful or annoying. We want to be helpful by sharing advice and support, and empathizing with the other person’s situation. But it’s important to think not only about our own intentions, but also about how we might be coming across in a way we didn’t intend.
