Be Here Now: Songs about Time and Appreciating the Present Moment

Continuing the popular series of song playlists for teachers, here are songs about growing up, seasons changing,  remembering the past, and taking action in the present.  I've included singers both young and old, as well as a couple of instrumental songs from one of my favorite guitarists.

As always, please preview the full lyrics and video before sharing any of these with your students.  And scroll to the bottom of the list for questions that can be used as prompts for discussion or writing.

All Things Must Pass, George Harrison

AWARE A Lil' Bit, JusTme

"Feel pain.  Feel pleasure.  Mindfulness helps us take action with compassion, so you see the bigger picture... Be aware of really what's up.  Present in the moment."

Be Here Now, George Harrison
lyrics; video (audio with album cover); video of instrumental version by Kathryn Cox

Cat's in the Cradle, Harry Chapin
lyrics; video (audio with album cover); video of cover by Ugly Kid Joe

Chelsea Morning, Joni Mitchell
lyrics; video of cover by Kathryn Hallberg (song starts at :20)
"Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I knew there was milk and toast and honey and a bowl of oranges, too.  And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses.  Oh, won't you stay.  We'll put on the day.  And we'll talk in present tenses."

Circle GameJoni Mitchell
"Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now. Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town. And they tell him 'take your time it won't be long now 'till you drag your feet to slow the circles down. And the seasons they go round and round. And the painted ponies go up and down. We're captive on the carousel of time."

Downside of Growing Up, Maddie and Tae
lyricsaudio with album cover
"Pack your bags and hug your mom.  Been dreaming about leaving for so long... Fixin' up your brand new place.  First day in and something breaks.  Your dad ain't there to get you unstuck. Yeah, that's the downside of growing up... It's the road you gotta take to get where you're going."

Earnest Went Out of His Mind, Larry Gallagher
(lyrics not available); video (audio with album cover)
"He stepped outside and he opened his eyes to the blue of the sky and the clouds rolling by… and he noticed the breeze and he noticed the trees… 'The message is clear.  The kingdom is here, and although I have the run of it none of it is about me'… and he knew if he found himself pointlessly and uselessly confined, he could always go out of his mind."

For a Short Time, Dean Musser

Heavenly Day, Patti Griffin

I Know a Man, Jeffrey Gaines
lyrics; video of live performance
"It's been years, he's been here.  And time just lingers, and no one knows... For twenty years he hasn't spoken a word.  He's been silent since the accident occurred... Can't lift a finger to stop what's wrong. He can't lift a leg to dance to a Beatles' song... So many people go day by day.  Sitting on their hands constantly complaining.  I know a man who'd know what to do."

It Won't Be Like This For Long, Darius Rucker
lyricsvideo

Live Like We're Dying, Kris Allen

Of Time and Rivers Flowing, Pete Seeger
lyricsrecording by Pete Seeger (audio with album cover)recording by Lehto and Wright (audio with album cover)
"Of time and rivers flowing, the seasons make a song. And we who live beside her, still try to sing along...The circles of the planets, the circles of the moon, the circles of the atoms all play a marching tune. And we who would join in can stand aside no longer. Now let us all begin."

Perfect Day, Lady Antebellum
lyricsvideo (audio with album cover)

Present Tense, Pearl Jam

Right Here, Right Now, Cassandra Wilson
lyricsvideo (audio with album cover)
"All the energy we spend on motion, all the circuitry and time... Everybody seems to want to get away to someplace.  Get away from themselves.  I got a feeling if they found that someplace they'd want to go some place else...  Don't you want to be right here, right now?"

River of Time, The Judds
lyricsrecording (audio with album cover); recording by Christie B. (audio with photo)

"I'm holding back a flood of tears, just thinking 'bout those happy years... Silence so deep only my soul can hear, says now the past is what I fear. The future isn't what it used to be. Only today is all that's promised me. Flow on, river of time. Wash away the pain and heal my mind."

"I remember when my only friend left me for a cooler gang...I was fifteen when I lost my sister.... I was angry with the world... I've learnt and lost along the way... And the reason why I'm here to stay is because my momma said for things to be alright, it takes time."
